Civic Leader Found Dead At Home Here
Ernest J. Kleppe, 56, for 18 years a Washoe county commissioner, was found dead at his home yesterday afternoon.
Sheriff’s deputies said Kleppe apparently died instantly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound about 4 p.m. The body was found in a back closet. Deputies said no note was found.
Kleppe had been in ill health from some time.
Kleppe was born in 1902 at Glendale, five miles from Reno, and graduated from the Reno schools and Heald’s Business College. He was in the sporting goods business for two years, 1918 and 1919, but his lifetime occupation was ranching in Glendale and Washoe Valley.
His political career began in 1931 when he was elected to a Washoe county seat in the assembly. He was also a member of the 1941 and 1943 assemblies and served on the judiciary and ways and means committees.
He was first elected to the board of commissioners in 1944 and served continuously until his death, often as chairman under the rotation system. He was defeated in his bid for renomination last September by Joseph G. Deming.
In 1954 he filed for justice of the peace of Reno township but was defeated by William R. Beemer, the present justice.
Funeral arrangements are pending with the Walton Funeral Home.
