Tom Jones Parry, Jr., known to many as, “Black Tom,” passed away November 21, 2017 in Yakima, WA, surrounded by family and friends. Longtime member of Holy Rosary Church and resident of Moxee, having one of the best views of Yakima Valley from his porch, he will be missed by many, having coached football over forty years.
Parry was born in Seattle January 24, 1923. He attended Queen Ann High School before enrolling at Washington State College where he was a standout offensive lineman, honored to be selected to play in the 1948 East-West Shrine Game. Parry’s college days were interrupted when he served his country during WWII as Navy Chief Specialist 1943-1946. He was given Outstanding Recruit recognition, along with American Area Campaign, Good Conduct and World War II Victory Medals.
Though during his career, he coached baseball and track, football was his game. After earning a Master’s Degree in Physical Education at Washington State, Parry started his football coaching career at Langley High School in 1949. His next opportunity took him to Clarkston High School, 1950-55, where he met his future wife, Mary Jane Breier. A graduate of University of Idaho and 1948 Lewiston Round-Up Queen, Breier was working at the Lewiston Tribune when a photo of Parry came across her desk. Mutual friends arranged a blind date which led to 35 years of marriage prior to Mrs. Parry’s death in 1985.
Parry’s career continued at Wenatchee Valley College, University of Montana, Washington State University before he landed at Central Washington University, serving as Head Football Coach from 1966-1982. He took a one-year hiatus from Central to join the staff of the United States Football League LA Express. Returning to CWU, Parry guided the 1983-84 Wildcats to a NAIA National Playoff berth and a second-place national ranking. Mary Jane, after many years supporting her husband win or lose, was able to cheer on the Wildcats during that exciting season, memories the Parry family cherishes.
Known for his great sense of humor, Parry enjoyed assigning nicknames to people, places and things. Many of his teams may recall “Blue Diesel Smoke” which was what players would encounter if they missed the team bus.
Parry was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane, son, Byron John Parry, his parents, and brother, Will Parry. He is survived by children, Mary Kay Danielson and her husband Allan, son, Tommy Parry, daughter Ann Marie Haley and her husband John, and daughter Kathleen Parry and his grandchildren, Claus, Molly and Dedra Danielson, Shane and Ethan Haley, Jennifer Parry, Matthew and Sara Adkins, three great grandchildren and longtime sweetheart Cookie Preston and family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, December 2, 2017 (preceded by viewing at 10:00) at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, in Ellensburg, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, with Military Honors. A reception will follow.
