Well Known Citizen and Veteran Passes Away

Holland, Ind., June 3 -- Ernest Werremeyer, of this place, well-known citizen and a veteran of the civil war, died at his home Wednesday night of last week of hardening of the arteries after an illness of over a year’s duration. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the German M.E. church, Rev. Dangel, the pastor officiating, assisted by August Wibbeler a special friend of the deceased and Rev. Gerhardt Koch of Huntingburg, a veteran of the civil war.
Mr. Werremeyer was born at Ladbergen kreis Tecklenburg, Preussen, Germany, October 25, 1843 and was 77 years and 7 months of age at the time of his death. In 1860 he came to America settling in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he remained for two year when he heard his country’s call and enlisted in the 83rd Ohio Regiment serving until the close of the war. During the war he took part in several engagements under General Thomas, among which was the siege of Vicksburg. After he had been honorably discharged he returned to Cincinnati where he remained for awhile longer, coming to the vicinity of Holland and engaging in farming.
In January 1870 he was united in marriage with Miss Louise Schulte, of this vicinity, and they settled on a farm just west of Holland. Eight children were born to this union, four of whom preceed the father in death. The surviving ones are Prof. D. W. Werremeyer of Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. August Weitkamp of Holland; Mrs. Anna Kunz and Mrs. Albert Fenneman of Huntingburg.
In 1886 his companion was taken from his side, and in 1887 he united in a second marriage with Miss Minnie Stork of Stendal who survives him. Three children were born to this union of whom two survive - Mrs. Arthur Johnstone of LaPorte, Ind., and Mrs. Harry Tormohlen of Holland.
In the autumn of 1899 he retired from farming and removed to Holland to reside where he has lived ever since.
In January 1867 under the preaching of Rev. J. H. Lukemeyer he united with the Methodist church....


Dies After a Long Illness
Ernst Werremeyer, pioneer and substantial figure and farmer of Holland community, passed away after a long illness.
Holl, June 2 - Ernst Werremeyer was born in Ladbergen, Prussia, Germany, Oct. 25, 1843. He came to America in 1860, and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he lived two years. Hearing the call of his adopted country he enlisted in the Eighty-third Ohio regiment and served in the Civil war three years - from 1862 to 1865. Receiving an honorable discharge he went back to Cincinnati. After a brief period he came to Holland.
Mr. Werremeyer was united in marriage to Louise Schulte in January 1870, and settled on a farm near Holland. To this union eight children were born, four of whom died. In 1866 his companion was taken. In 1887 he again married taking to wife Minnie Stork of Stenday. [sic] Two [sic] this union three children were born. Five children preceded the father in death - three passing away in infancy.
In his youth Mr. Werremeyer united with the Methodist church and became a true and active member, serving many years as a trustee and steward.
In the fall of 1899 he moved from his farm to Holland to spend his remaining days. he was a sufferer for many years of a hardening of the arteries -resulting in several apoplectic strokes and making him bedfast the last year. he bore his suffering with patience - never complaining.
He departed this life May 15, 1921, at the age of 77 years and 7 months, and leaves to mourn his sorrowing widow, six children - five daughters and four [sic] sons, - Prof. D. W. Werremeyer of Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. Arthur Johnston of La Porte; Mrs. Anna Kunz and Mrs. Alvert Fenneman of Huntingburg; Mrs. August Weitkamp and Mrs. Harry Tormohlen of Holland, and fourteen grandchildren.
Rev. Gerhard Koch of the Evangelical Association, Huntingburg, and August Wibbeler, assisted at the service.

Last Will and Testament of Ernest Werremeyer
In the Name of the Benevolent Father of All;
I, Ernest Werremeyer, of Dubois County, Indiana, do make and publish this my last will and testament; It is my will that my just debts and all charges be paid out of my estate.

Item 1: I give and device [sic] to my beloved wife, Wilhelmina Werremeyer, in lien [sic] of her interest in my land a one-third part of the farm consisting of one hundred and ten acres, on which now resides Danile [sic] Finke, being situated in Cass township, Dubois County, Indiana, also one third part of the lots and dwellings in which reside, situated in the Town of Holland, Indiana, also one third part of all personal property that I may be in possession of at the time of my decease.
Item 2: I give and device [sic] all of the remaining two thirds part of my real estate, together with the two thirds part of my personal property that I may be in possession of at the time of my decease to my daughter, Carrie Finke, to my daughter, Jennie Weitkamp, to my daughter Anna Kunz, to my daughter, Matilda Fenneman, to my son Daniel W. Werremeyer, to my daughter Lydia Werremeyer, to my daughter, Amelia Werremeyer, and to my grand Daughter Edna Werremeyer, share and share alike.
If however, my grand daughter, Edna Werremeyer, should die before she becomes the age of twenty one years, and leaving no childrens [sic] living, then the share of the said property above deviced [sic] and bequeathed to my grand daughter is hereby deviced [sic] and bequeathed to my son Daniel W. Werremeyer, to my daughter, Carrie Finke, to my daughter, Jennie Weitkamp, to my daughter, Anna Kunz, to my daughter Matilda Fenneman, to my daughter, Lydia Werremeyer, to my daughter Amelia Werremeyer, share and share alike.
Item 3: I do hereby nominate and appoint my son Daniel W. Werremeyer, executor of this my last will and testiment [sic].
I do hereby revoke all former will [sic] by me made.
In testimony hereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the 14th day of July, in the year of 1914.

Bartley, C. of D.C., personally came Daniel Reutepohler one of two subscribing witnesses to the foregoing last will and testiment [sic] of Ernest Werremeyer, late of Dubois County, Indiana, deceased, and being duly sworn on his oath says that he was present of the execution of said last will; that the same was duly executed; that at the time of the execution thereof, said testator was of full age to device [sic] his property, of sound mind and not under coercion or restraint; that said testator requested John A. Erne and this affiant to sign said will as witnesses thereto, which they accordingly did in the presence of said testator and in the presence of each other as subscribing witnesses thereto.
