H.C. Heidtman Dies Suddenly Friday Night
Prominent Business Man and Political Figure Stricken
A heart attack Friday night took the life of Harry C. Heidtman, prominent Reno business man.
He was stricken at his home and was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he died a few minutes after arrival. In apparent good health, he had been active in his business affairs to the last day of his life.
Mr. Heidtman was born Nov. 17, 1874, in Germany and came to the United States when he was a boy. He attended school in San Francisco, then worked as a clerk in that city from 1889 to 1896.
The following year he came to Reno, and was first employed at Becker’s cafe, then for ten years was manager of this well known establishment. He became the proprietor of Becker’s, which he owned until this spring, when the place was sold to California interests. In 1909 he became local agent for a San Francisco brewery, hold this agency until the arrival of prohibition.
In 1922, he entered the automobile business, taking the state agency for Buick cars, and for many years he was one of the largest automobile dealers in Nevada. In 1930 he sold the Buick agency to W. Keith Scott. Later he operated the Nash agency here, then retired from the automobile business. Until his death he engaged in real estate and insurance through the Washoe Realty Co. which he owned.
For many years he was interested in aviation, and at one time had an agency for the sale of planes. He became a pilot fifteen years ago.
Mr. Heidtman had extensive property interests in Reno, owning several downtown business buildings, and also owned other property about the city.
An ardent Republican, Mr. Heidtman took an active part in political affairs for 30 years. He was elected assemblyman from Washoe county in 1914 and 1916, and was Washoe state senator for two terms, being first elected in 1930 and again in 1938. Two years ago he again was a candidate for state senator but lost the nomination to Richard Cowles.
Twice he was a candidate for lieutenant governor. In 1926 he lost the Republican nomination to Morley Griswold, and in 1934 was defeated by A.S. Henderson, in the latter election losing the primary election by 237 votes.
Two times he sought election as mayor of Reno. In 1939 he was one of six candidates for the office, which was won by August Frolich. Last year he again ran for the position with three other candidates, the election going to Harry Stewart.
He was a member of Washoe lodge No. 35 of Masons, the Scottish Rite bodies of Nevada, Kerak temple of the Shrine, Reno lodge of Elks, of which he was ruler in 1933-34, the Knights of Pythias, the Loyal Oder of Moose and the Reno Rotary club.
Surviving are his widow, the former Rose E. Becker, whom he married in Sacramento in 1902; a son Donald Glenn Heidtman, now in the army air corps and three sisters, Mr. Fred Stoltz of San Francisco, Mrs. Bertha Pape and Mrs. Jesse Remis of Oakland, Calif.
Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Ross-Burke Co.
