Obituary notes for James William MOFFIT
Union County Advocate, Morganfield, KY, 10 September 1970
Bill Moffit, former teacher-farmer, dies
James William (Bill) Moffit, 80, former teacher retired farmer and well known Union County civic leader, died at 1:50 p.m. last Wednesday at Union County Hospital. He had never fully regained consciousness following injuries sustained in a fall at his mobile home at Moffit’s Lake several weeks ago.
Born in Union County at Bordley, he was the son of the late Frank and Mollie Brown Moffit. He began his teaching career in Union County at Willow Grove near the Y at the age of 17, and next taught at McClure’s and Boxville.
Later he served as a member of the faculty at Drake Business College, Patterson [sic], New Jersey, where he met Daisy H. Spear, a Vassar graduate whom he married July 3, 1919 at the the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. They moved to Kentucky in 1920. She preceded him in death two years and six months ago.
Moffit, besides being engaged in farming, worked at Morphett-Waller Equipment Company here in 1931 and 1932. He was employed at Camp Breckinridge during World War II in the Quartermaster section, and later was employed by Camp Cab Company and Bickett Equipment Company. He devoted a great deal of his life to promoting good roads, rural electricity and telephone service in his community and played an important role in development of a long time dream, the Moffit Recreation Area, which was named in his honor. He was a member of Morganfield Lions Club.
Many former students were among those paying their respects at funeral services held at 10 a.m. Friday at Whitsell Funeral Home. Rites were conducted by Rev. Don Davis, pastor Morganfield Methodist Church. Burial was in Morganfield Odd Fellows Cemetery. Active pall-bearers were Gordon Morgan, Alan Baker, Charles Woodring, Allen Freer, Maurice Springer and High Kuykendall.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Louise Johnstone of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Beatrice Marvel, of Sullivan, and Mrs. Anna Morgan, city. Six grandchildren also survive.
