Obituary notes for Alma Louise Therese THUSIUS
Herald (Arlington Heights, Illinois) 6 November 1928
Mrs. Alma McElhose, 82 years old, a pioneer of Arlington Heights, died Friday morning and was laid to rest Monday afternoon. The funeral held in the Methodist church, which she loved so well, was largely attended. Rev. Billman officiated. Music was by a a vested quartette. The W.R.C. of which the deceased was a member, held a simple ceremony at the grave in Arlington cemetery.
Mrs. McElhose with the exception of a few years spent in Wisconsin, was a resident of Arlington Heights sixty-four years. She was among the older residents of the village and her husband was a civil war veteran.
The deceased was born in Saxon, Germany, Sept. 6, 1846, and when 18 years old came alone across the ocean to join her elder sister, Mrs. Julia Weinrich, in Arlington Heights. The latter, who is 84 years old, survives her.
When Mr. James McElhose returned home from the Civil war, he met and the same year, was married to the lass from Germany. Their married life was a happy one and five sons and a daughter were born to them. Mr. McElhose died July 20, 1915.
Mrs. McElhose has been an invalid many years. Her condition became more pitiful a few years ago when she lost her sight, but thru it all she showed a courageous spirit. She was a faithful attendant at the Methodist church as often as it was possible for her to get out. She maintained her interest in the church all these years and there was not a pastor of the local church who was not inspired by her Christianity and faithfulness.
About eight weeks ago, Mrs. McElhose fell down the cellar stairs and although severely bruised and cut, she apparently recovered. Since that time she has been confined to her bed a great deal. Death came quietly Friday.
There remain to mourn their loss, five sons, Henry of North Tonawanda, N.Y. and Chas., Edward, Arthur and James of Arlington Heights and one daughter, Laura, who resided at home; also ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
