Notes for Elizabeth LAWTON
Elizabeth’s last name was first mentioned by Daisy Spear Moffit. Grandmother Daisy has been correct on all the other names I have researched that she knew, and it seems that now she is also correct on this one. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren were given Lawton as a first or middle name and so was Elizabeth Lawton Hindle, the spinster daughter. The Oldham marriage is the first to have been found in 30 years of research that shows a John Hindle and Elizabeth Lawton marrying. This record lists the couple as being from Cow Hill which is a little blip near Oldham and has John as a tinworker. They had their three daughters at Dukinfield, baptized at Staleybridge across the Tame River from Oldham. The births of Mary, Elizabeth and Jane correspond to the dates for these daughters that were located in the United States. There were at least two other daughters listed at the same Old St. George’s Church who must have died early.
Being widowed rather early, Betty, as she was listed in the church records, became the head of the family of seven children. In 1850 she is living with 6 of her children in the residence of Gilbert Elliot. Mary, the oldest, had been married by this time. I have thus far not located Elizabeth in the 1860 census. By 1870 she is the head of a household that includes her eldest daughter, Mary and her family, and 2 of her daughters, Salina and Jane, with their respective children.
It must have been very hard for her to see her husband and 4 of her children die before her. The family struggled to get by with most of the family, women included, having to work. She did receive a widowed mother’s pension from James’ Civil War service until he married. Her last place of residence was Washington & Division St.
